Pixar's acclaimed film "Inside Out" illuminated the intricacies of human emotions, offering audiences a poignant exploration of joy, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust. With the highly anticipated sequel, "Inside Out 2," director Kelsey Mann embarked on a new journey into the depths of the mind, introducing audiences to Riley's evolving emotional landscape. However, amidst the excitement, one emotion proved too heavy to carry forward.
In an exclusive interview with TheWrap, director Kelsey Mann delved into the creative process behind "Inside Out 2" and the decision to cut a pivotal character. Mann revealed that a new emotion, Shame, was initially slated to join the cast, adding a layer of complexity to Riley's emotional journey. However, as production progressed, it became evident that Shame's presence cast a shadow over the film's narrative.
“It was not fun to watch,” Mann confessed. “It was not fun. It was too heavy. You know when you see a good movie and you’re like, ‘Man that was a great movie.’ You want to see it again? ‘No, not really.’ There are movies like that."
The weight of Shame's character threatened to detract from the film's overall enjoyment, prompting Mann to make the difficult decision to remove it from the final cut. "I don’t want to make that movie," Mann emphasized. "I want to make a movie that’s really meaningful and when you’re asked, ‘Do you want to see that movie again?’ You say, ‘Yes!’ Because those are my favorite movies. And those are the kinds of movies I want to make. And I did not want to return to that movie with that character. It’s not that funny.”
While Shame's omission may disappoint some fans, Mann's commitment to crafting a meaningful and engaging cinematic experience remains unwavering. By prioritizing the emotional resonance of the story, Mann ensures that "Inside Out 2" maintains its status as a beloved and unforgettable journey into the human psyche.
As audiences eagerly await the release of "Inside Out 2," they can rest assured that the film's emotional depth and authenticity will shine through, captivating hearts and minds alike. And while Shame may not have found its place on the screen, its story serves as a reminder of the intricate balance between light and darkness within us all.
Inside Out 2's Emotional Spectrum: Anxiety Takes Center Stage
In the roster of emotions making the final cut for Inside Out 2, one standout addition is the character Anxiety, brought to life by the talented Maya Hawke. Speaking on the decision to include Anxiety while leaving Shame behind, art director and character designer Jason Deamer provided insight into the creative process.
"It was like, What are we trying to say?” Deamer pondered. “Shame is a real thing in life but not everybody goes through that. But anxiety is in all of us. It’s just better. I think it’s a more important thing to talk about than some kind of message about don’t shame yourself. It was preachy. Anxiety, you need it. It’s not 100% bad.”
Deamer further elaborated, “I didn’t miss Shame. But I did like the design of it. There’s elements that are still there. This movie has always been about dealing with the feeling that you’re not good enough. And we still have that element, that shame element in there.”
In addition to Anxiety, Inside Out 2 introduces a host of new emotions, including Envy (voiced by Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos), Embarrassment (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser), and Nostalgia (voiced by June Squibb). These characters join the beloved cast of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira).
With its anticipated premiere set for June 14, 2024, Inside Out 2 promises to continue the emotional journey that captivated audiences worldwide.
